Pro Bono

As legal leaders in our communities, we consider it our responsibility to provide voluntary pro bono services to those who are otherwise unable to pay. Our extensive pro bono network works with courts in the jurisdictions we serve, organizations that serve the underprivileged, and economically disadvantaged, and national legal service providers to provide services. We know that our clients often are also engaged in their own pro bono community initiatives, and we welcome client partnerships where our client’s legal staff and our attorneys may work side by side in representing pro bono clients.

Each associate working on a pro bono matter is expected to take responsibility for the matter under the guidance of the appropriate practice partner or counsel. We are duty bound to provide excellent representation to our pro bono clients as we do for our paying clients. By representing a client in a pro bono matter an attorney gives back to its community by providing legal services to those who otherwise may not otherwise afford deserved representation.

Although we have contacts and relationships with providers in many states, and can provide contacts, we encourage our attorneys to explore meaningful pro bono matters of their choosing within our guidelines.

  • Environmental Team Helps Indiana Church Keep Its Home

When a small Indiana congregation discovered that their church sat on land contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, likely caused by migration from a now‑defunct neighboring gas station, Ice Miller stepped in to help. Representing the congregation pro bono, Ice Miller’s Environmental team immediately recognized that something didn’t add up. The team began working closely with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), through the Indiana Brownfields Program, advocating on behalf of the congregation and to ensure their story was heard and understood.

  • Volunteers Support Local Arts at Indy Pro Bono Clinic

Ice Miller teamed up with the Indy Arts Council to host a pro bono legal clinic for local nonprofit arts organizations. With the help of 13 lawyers and 10 business professional volunteers, the clinic supported six local nonprofit arts organizations, offering practical guidance on issues ranging from nonprofit board responsibilities to employment law. The program also included two CLE sessions led by partners Charles Bush and Gina Giacone, who generously shared their time and experience.

  • Second Chance Driving License Reinstatement Clinic

The Second Chance Driving License Reinstatement Clinic (“Second Chance Workshop”) was formed in 2019 by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to provide individuals with information and direction on how to take the first steps in getting their driving privileges reinstated. Along with helping individuals resolve unpaid traffic tickets, the Second Chance Workshop helps resolve suspensions related to falling behind in child support payments. Ice Miller collaborates with local partners and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to assist indigent individuals in the reinstatement of their driving licenses.
