In celebration of Pride Month, Ice Miller LLP is hosting a half-day virtual conference on Tuesday, June 14 featuring LGBTQ+ focused legal topics, as well as some of-the-moment general LGBTQ+ topics! The program offers 1.5 hours of IN, IL, and OH Distance CLE Credit and 1.0 hour of Ethics Credit (pending approval). 9:15 - 9:45 a.m. (EST) Opening

Keynote Speakers: Greg Bourke and Michael DeLeon, Obergefell v. Hodges plaintiffs

This session will kick off with Ice Miller’s Managing Partner Mike Millikan providing opening remarks, including a brief update on the Firm’s ongoing diversity initiatives. Mike will then hand over the virtual podium to our keynote speakers, Greg Bourke and Michael DeLeon. Greg and Mike were the named plaintiffs in the Kentucky marriage equality lawsuit that merged with the Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, which resulted in nationwide marriage equality in 2015. They will share their experience fighting for marriage equality through the judicial system and how the law has shaped their lives and rights as gay men.

10 - 11 a.m. (EST) Session 1 

The Gender Unicorn: Gender & Sexuality 101


Presenter: Lane Shirrell, Community Education and Research ManagerKaleidoscope Youth Center 

Explore the complexity and depth of gender, including gender identity, gender expression, and sex assigned at birth, along with sexuality and the LGBTQIA+ acronym. Participants will learn about the importance of using pronouns correctly and will have an opportunity to practice doing so.

11:15 a.m. - 12 p.m. (EST) Session 2

Litigation and Legal Trends Impacting LGBTQ+ People

Presenters:
 Ellen Pactor, Associate, Ice Miller LLP and Adam Alexander, Associate, Ice Miller LLP

This session will provide an overview of current litigation in federal and state courts related to LGBTQ+ issues. The presenters also will discuss other legal trends that impact LGBTQ+ people.

The Potential Aftermath of Dobbs

Presenter: Abigail Barr, Associate, Ice Miller LLP

In the wake of the leaked opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, what are the potential impacts on Fourteenth Amendment rights as guaranteed under prior opinions? In this session, we will consider the impact of Dobbs, particularly on other landmark cases like Obergefell v. Hodges and Loving v. Virginia.
