James (Jim) Smolik is an associate in Ice Miller’s Business Group where he focuses on mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, corporate finance and general corporate matters.

Prior to rejoining Ice Miller, Jim served as the lead counsel in the Americas for Williams Lea Inc., a portfolio company of Advent International. While at Williams Lea, Jim was responsible for all contract negotiations including new business, procurement and credit agreements. Jim also managed various litigation matters and data and privacy issues and frequently worked with the executive team to help mitigate legal risk while driving profitability.

Jim received his juris doctor from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the University of Dayton. Jim is a recipient of the Arthur James Seeley Award, which is presented to one student each year who exhibits an entrepreneurial enthusiasm and bent while in law school. During law school, Jim was a staff editor for The Ohio State Business Law Journal and served as a Moritz Board Fellow.

Prior to attending law school, Jim worked in public affairs, and is a veteran of numerous state and federal political campaigns.

Jim and his wife Alexandra (a US Air Force veteran) live in Columbus with their six pound dog Izzy.
