The DePauw University graduate served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and also served as co-chair of the commission that investigated the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Later, he and late Republican U.S. Sen. and former Indianapolis mayor Dick Lugar established the Hamilton-Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University’s Bloomington campus.

Political analyst Kip Tew, former chair of the Indiana Democratic Party, was a longtime friend of Hamilton and calls him “arguably the state’s greatest public servant.”
