Press Release
Ice Miller LLP Welcomes Hal Wood as Partner, Expanding Chicago Litigation and Complex Commercial Trial Capabilities
Ice Miller LLP announces Hal J. Wood has joined the firm's Chicago office as a partner in the Litigation Group. A seasoned trial attorney with more than 30 years of courtroom experience, Wood brings a wealth of experience litigating complex commercial cases and a proven record of success in federal and state courts nationwide and before arbitration tribunals. His arrival strengthens Ice Miller's Chicago presence and enhances the firm's ability to serve business clients facing high-stakes disputes.
At Ice Miller, Wood will focus on complex commercial litigation, including fraud and breach of representation claims arising from mergers and acquisitions and other business transactions, restrictive covenant and trade secret misappropriation matters, and disputes among owners of closely held companies. He works directly with business leaders and their teams to analyze complex disputes and deliver strategic, outcome-focused counsel with a demonstrated willingness and ability to take matters all the way to trial when necessary.
“Hal is a key part of our continued growth in Chicago and our broader national litigation strategy. He brings a depth of trial experience and business acumen that few litigators can match,” said Joshua L. Christie, Ice Miller’s chief managing partner. “His ability to navigate high-stakes commercial disputes, his instinct for when to fight and when to settle, and his track record through verdict align seamlessly with Ice Miller’s commitment to standing with clients through their most consequential legal challenges.”
Wood joins Ice Miller from Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton where he served as a partner in their complex commercial litigation practice group.
“We are thrilled to have Hal join our litigation group,” said Nicholas Casto, partner in Ice Miller’s Litigation Group in the Chicago office. “His experience and proven track record give our clients access to seasoned advocacy that can make a meaningful difference when the stakes are highest.”
Wood has been the lead trial counsel in several notable cases. In a leading case in the staffing industry, Wood served as lead trial counsel in successfully defending former employees and their new employer in federal court litigation involving claims for breaches of restrictive covenants, breaches of fiduciary duties, misappropriation of trade secrets, and violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Wood was also lead trial counsel in a will contest that determined control of a multi-million-dollar family-owned business, that significantly impacted estate litigation going forward.
Among his other notable matters, Wood served as lead trial counsel for a majority shareholder facing claims exceeding $70 million for breach of representation and fraud arising from the sale of a business. The matter resulted in a favorable settlement after trial had commenced, followed by favorable rulings enforcing the settlement terms.
“I have spent my career building and trying complex commercial cases. I wanted to join a firm whose ambitions matched my own and that is actively investing in litigation while recognizing the value that experienced trial lawyers bring to clients,” said Wood. “Ice Miller is that firm. The depth of the team, the culture, and the firm's vision for its Chicago office made this an easy decision. I am excited to get to work.”
Wood earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law and his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
