Nonetheless, a surge in demand, particularly for deal work, as associates and partners alike had grown comfortable working from their homes, forced many law firms to embrace innovative hiring strategies, even as the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines offered the prospect of a path toward normalcy.

"2021 was pretty crazy for associate talent," said Michael Millikan, managing partner of Second Hundred firm Ice Miller. "We really sort of embraced working from home."

But as the pandemic wound down, the goal was for early-year associates to transition to an interim, hybrid work schedule, which continues to this day. Ice Miller associates are now required to be in-office three days a week, although the firm will consider the occasional remote associate hire under extenuating circumstances.

"You go where you can find talent," Millikan said.
