Joshua Klarfeld and Jennifer Jackman Quoted in The Am Law Litigation Daily: “Head to Toe Advocacy: How Clothes Fit Into a Litigation Strategy”

January 29, 2026 – The Am Law Litigation Daily

Ice Miller partners Joshua Klarfeld and Jennifer Jackman were quoted in Law.com’s The Am Law Litigation Daily article, "Head to Toe Advocacy: How Clothes Fit Into a Litigation Strategy.”

The article included:

"For us guys, it's a much easier equation,” said Joshua Klarfeld, a partner at Ice Miller. “When I go to court, it's almost like a uniform. It's basically, dark suit, white shirt, tie that is not particularly flashy—I tend to lean towards a conservative tie. Always pressed white shirt, a belt and shoes that match, and that's it."

Ice Miller partner Jennifer Jackman noted no judge is going to fault an attorney for being overdressed for court. However, having obviously expensive clothing or accessories may harm a litigator’s connection with a jury.

"I might soften my look if I'm in front of a jury, a bit. I wouldn't be as concerned to bring a luxury briefcase or purse if it's a bench trial, but if I was going in front of a jury, I probably wouldn't do that,” she said. "You want to seem relatable, and obviously not everyone's purchasing those kinds of things."
