Ice Miller Adds IP Group in Washington, Philadelphia, and Columbus

Ice Miller LLP has expanded its intellectual property practice with the addition of a nine-person group joining the firm from Baker Hostetler. The group currently includes four partners, two of counsels, two patent agents and a professional staff member and will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Columbus offices.

Joining Ice Miller are Washington, D.C.-based partners Kenneth Sheehan and Fabian Koenigbauer, patent agents Eduardo Gonzalez and Michael Graham, and paralegal Nancy Paine; Philadelphia-based partners Jacqueline Lesser and Lesley Grossberg, and of counsel TC Clare; and Columbus-based of counsel Candice Reder.

“We are thrilled to welcome these lawyers and legal professionals to Ice Miller,” commented Chief Managing Partner Michael Millikan. “Their practices and skillsets greatly enhance the firm’s intellectual property practice and bench strength, particularly in complex electrical and mechanical technologies and trademarks, as well as our already strong biotech IP practice.”

The addition of the nine new lawyers, patent agents and professional staff increases Ice Miller’s IP practice by 30 percent and continues the firm’s growth in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.

Sheehan, formerly a partner at Baker Hostetler and co-chair of that firm’s Electrical, Mechanical and Computer Science Prosecution team, concentrates his practice on intellectual property portfolio management, acquisitions and protection. He is involved in all aspects of the patent process, including prosecution, licensing, litigation and transactions. He is experienced in acquiring and evaluating patent rights for complex electrical technologies and has significant experience in the post-grant procedures in the U.S. and internationally.

Koenigbauer, formerly counsel at Baker Hostetler, is a patent attorney who helps clients secure, expand and enforce patent rights in both the U.S. and globally. He focuses on building patent portfolios for small and large molecules (biologics), analyzing freedom-to-operate issues, maximizing patent term and developing patent protection for products subject to Hatch-Waxman or biologics litigations. He also advises his clients on adverse patent matters, including litigation, oppositions and PTAB trials.

Lesser, formerly counsel at Baker Hostetler, is a veteran trademark and copyright litigator in federal courts and before administrative tribunals. She provides clients with practical, strategic counsel to a wide range of clients in copyright and trademark matters in the U.S. and internationally. Her areas of concentration include enforcement and defense of IP, strategic branding strategies, trademark clearance and portfolio development, IP due diligence and cobranding and licensing of trademarks and copyrights. Prior to Baker Hostetler, Lesser was counsel at Woodcock Washburn LLP in Philadelphia.

Grossberg, formerly counsel at Baker Hostetler, is an experienced intellectual property litigator and branding strategist. She focuses her practice on all aspects of intellectual property litigation, including patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and unfair competition litigation, and has an extensive background in trademark clearance, prosecution and global portfolio management.

Clare, formerly patent counsel at Baker Hostetler, is a patent attorney with years of patent prosecution and litigation experience for start ups-, mid-sized- and Fortune 50 companies. He is trained in integrated circuit design, game strategy and portfolio management.

Reder, formerly a trademark attorney at Baker Hostetler, focuses her practice on trademark, trade dress, unfair competition, copyright and trade secret matters. She regularly represents clients in state and federal courts as well as the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeals Board.

Gonzalez, formerly a patent agent at Baker Hostetler, assists clients with the preparation of patent applications, domestic and foreign patent prosecution, IP portfolio management and counseling. He has drafted many patent applications and responses and supported litigation in such fields as AR/VR & LED/LCD displays, blockchain, quantum computing, network security, wireless networks, drones, power distribution, media distribution and analytics, and AI.

Graham, formerly a patent agent at Baker Hostetler, assists clients with the preparation of patent applications, domestic and foreign patent prosecution, IP portfolio management and client counseling focusing on a wide variety of technologies. Prior to becoming a patent agent, Michael was a molecular biologist devising experiments, sequencing DNA and administering a UNIX computer network to store sequence information.
